12. PAJU (2018 – US Army 2nd Infantry)
This memorial located in Imjingak close to the 38th Parallel is dedicated to the Second Infantry Division (2ID) of the United States Army, known as the “Indianhead.”
On July 23, 1950, the 2ID became the first unit to reach Korea directly from the United States. Soon after their arrival, the 2nd Infantry Division was surrounded by 90,000 Chinese soldiers. The soldiers fought bravely for three days and three nights, eventually forcing a withdrawal of the Chinese forces. This was seen as a major turning point in the war.
2ID is still stationed in Korea, where 28,500 American soldiers remain to defend the Korean Peninsula alongside 1,100 South Korean soldiers (called KATUSAs —Korean Augmentation to the U.S. Army). Having fought in four wars from World War I onwards, the 2ID is one of the most decorated Divisions in the U.S. Army.
