18. Gapyeong (2018 – Australian New Zealand Gapyoung Memorial)
This memorial located in Kapyong is dedicated to the Australian and New Zealand soldiers who fought bravely in the Korean War. Although heavily outnumbered, they helped blunt the Chinese offensive in April 23-25, 1951, which prevented a breakthrough on the United Nations Command central front and thereby the capture of Seoul.
At Kapyong, the Australians and New Zealanders, fighting alongside the Canadians and Americans, had won a decisive victory. However, the battle came at great cost to Australia’s 27th Brigade, especially to its 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR). 32 Australians were killed, 59 were wounded, and 3 were taken as prisoners. Two New Zealanders were killed.
